College grads are facing something we've never seen, literally

This is a very short segment, which I think is telling of the next several years.

The point they make which drives the reality home is that for the first time in history, college grad unemployment is higher than general unemployment (6.6% vs 4.2%), which has never ever happened.

I’m thinking about this more and more for all our kids going into college.

I'm guessing many of us will have kids living back at home, or in some cases we already do as new white-collar jobs are going to be harder to break into.

The advice I'm giving my kids (next year I have one senior and one freshman at CU Boulder) to navigate this is: focus on learning how to learn and always be thinking about how to adapt while leveraging AI tools available. Take chances to try new things - know that everything will be different every few months.

One challenge a lot of this generation will face is they feel like what they are studying might vaporize by the time they graduate, so they check out. I've been using software agents (architecture agents, project mgmt, coding agents, testing) pretty actively the last few weeks and it's clear, absolutely everything is about to change. In fact, everything already has changed, but it will probably take a few months to propagate out for most people.

There is a lot of good news, too, in terms of what's possible, but this is definitely going to be a challenge for many of our kids in the short term. At least those who don't go into plumbing or become electricians, and even those have a timer.

I am optimistic we will all figure out these new paths to navigate and there is a potential future that is very bright. I think the only mistake at this time is to ignore it all.....unless you're living in an Amish Paradise
